Annual Lunch – House of Lords

This was a very successful and enjoyable occasion which was hosted by Baroness Meta Ramsay, a long-standing member of the Club.  Our speaker, Professor Anna Dominiczak , Professor of Cardio-Vascular Medicine at the University of Glasgow gave a most interesting insight into the problems of heart disease in Scotland.  The food and wine were excellent and even the weather was kind to us.  So many people from the Club  were involved in organising this event and our thanks go to everyone for making this such a memorable day.

Summer Outing – Saturday 5th September

The summer outing this year is a visit and guided tour of  Shakespeare’s Globe Theatre in Southwark.    The tour will start at 11am but you are asked to meet at the Globe Tour and Exhibition entrance on Bankside at 11.45am in order to be “processed”.  This entrance is well signposted.  The tour will last for about 1 hour, finishing around 11.45am.  The cost is  £9.50 for an adult (£8.00 concession) and guests will be very welcome at this event.

This ticket also allows access to the current Shakespeare Exhibition.  To go round the exhibition takes just over 1 hour and can be done anytime during the afternoon.  The exhibition closes at 5pm.

For those who would like to purchase a coffee before the event Maureen will be in the Founders Arms public house on Bankside from 10.00am.  This is situated on the riverside before you get to Tate Modern coming from Waterloo.

After the tour there are lots of places of interest in the vicinity including Tate Modern, Southwark Catherdral and Borough Market (which closes at 5pm) .  There are also lots of places to eat between the Founders Arms and London Bridge including pubs, restaurant chains like Pizza Express and cafes in Tate Modern, the Cathedral and the Market.

The performance on the day is Shakespeare’s  As You Like It which takes place at 2pm and 7.30pm.  Seats can be booked in advance by phoning the Box Office on 020 7401 9919 or by going to the website: www.shakespeares-globe.org.  A cushion can be hired for £1 and a seat-back for £3.50 (both highly recommended).

If you would like to come to the Summer Outing please complete the slip at the bottom of the page and return to me by Saturday 29th August.
