Dickens Exhibition – Museum of London

Around 20 members and guests came to the Museum of London for this event.  The introductory talk by the curator of paintings, prints and drawings at the Museum was excellent and really set the scene of London in the time of Dickens.  The exhibition itself was also excellent and one could see why it had been visited by so many people – far exceeding the expected numbers.  It was an excellent day out in a very interesting part of London – even though traffic everywhere seemed to be chaotic!

Annual Dinner – CBI Centre Point –  Thursday 21st June

Our annual dinner this year will be held in Centre Point – HQ of the CBI (Confederation of British Industries) and our speaker will be Iain McMillan who is Director of the CBI in Scotland.  With talk of a referendum on independence for Scotland it will be interesting to hear his views.  The cost of the dinner is £45.00 and guests will be very welcome at this event.   There will be a drinks reception at 7pm followed by dinner at 7.30pm.  if you would like to come to this event please complete the slip at the bottom of the page and return it to me by 2nd June.  If using bank transfer please let me know when you have done this and how many people are coming (and any dietary requirements).

The address of Centre Point is 103 New Oxford Street, London WC1A 1DU and the nearest underground station is Tottenham Court Road from which there is an exit signposted Centre Point.  Once in the building you should go to the security desk in the main reception area and you will then be directed to the venue on the first floor.

Dates for your Diary

Saturday 15th September Afternoon tea at St Columba’s, Pont Street when our Olympic volunteers (who include a torch bearer – see below) will be telling us of their experiences during the Olympics.
Saturday 27th October AGM and lunch, St Columba’s, Pont Street

STOP PRESS – Marjory Bremner a member of the Club will be carrying the Olympic torch in Brent on day 68 of the relay (Wednesday 25th July) sometime between 10.25am and 12.20pm before it moves on to Barnet.  Details of the final route will be given out about 4 weeks in advance so anyone who lives around that area please come out and support Marjory and if you manage to get a photograph do let us know.

Our AGM is not far off and as usual we are looking for volunteers for our committee.  Several of the longest serving members of the committee are standing down and although there are people willing to take over their positions we always need new people who bring fresh blood and new ideas.  There are usually 2 or 3 committee meetings a year and most business is conducted by e-mail so it is not an onerous task (and we are all quite nice).  Please do think about it and if you are interested you should speak to a member of the committee.
