February 2014

The President’s Tea Party in Richoux, Brompton Road, London was a great success with thirty-three members enjoying an extremely good afternoon tea, with plenty of sandwiches and cakes to go around. Going out for afternoon tea certainly helped cope with the January blues and the continual rain we have had recently.

Our next event is the Spring Lunch which will be held on Saturday 1st March 2014 in St Columba’s Hall, Pont St, London. As usual, we shall meet at 12.30 for drinks before sitting down to lunch at 1pm. The lunch will be followed by a talk from our guest speaker, Steve Hawe, who is from the charity Beanstalk. Beanstalk is a national charity that provides one-to-one literacy support in primary schools through a network of trained Beanstalk reading volunteers. I am sure that this will be a very interesting talk and perhaps it may inspire some of you to become volunteers. The cost of the lunch will be £13 to include two courses, coffee and wine. All replies and payments must be returned to the secretary by Saturday 22nd February so that we can organise the catering with Leonard. If you are using bank transfer, can you let the secretary know by the 22nd February that you are attending and that you have made a bank transfer to the Club? Contact numbers on the day will be as advised.

Marjory Montgomerie will be attending the Talent Awards event at the University of Glasgow next week. As a donor to the programme of Talent Awards, the Club will be represented by Marjory at the dinner. Anne OHagan will be attending the Snell Dinner at the University of Glasgow, as will Anne Robins, on Saturday 22nd February so we shall be able to report back about that event at the Spring Lunch along with Marjory. It is ideal to be able to raise the Club’s profile at events like these.

LCLES will be holding its Annual Lunch at the Caledonian Club on the 21st May 2014. The speaker will be Lady Elizabeth Valance. If anyone is interested in attending, you can get more information from Marjorie Bremner – Membership Secretary
