March 2015

The Spring Lunch was extremely popular this year and most enjoyable. Glasgow University-educated rural GP David Hogg and vascular surgeon Zubir Ahmed were joined by Tanzanian trauma surgeon Frank Mayaya. They contrasted the excitement of mountain rescue and hands-on life-saving on Arran with the hi-tech world of surgery and the special challenges of African medicine, not least crocodile bites and hyena attacks. Zubir also revealed his original research into female surgical pioneers Tina Gray and Ellen Brown who broke gender barriers with their work at Glasgow Royal infirmary in the early 20th century and set the stage for what are now 70 per cent female admissions to medical schools.

Our next event is a guided tour of the Old Bailey (the Central Criminal Court) which will take place on Tuesday the 28th of April, at 5.45pm., meeting at the Lord Mayor’s Entrance in Warwick Square off Warwick Lane to start the guided tour at 6.00pm. It will last approximately 1½ hours and our guide’s name is Charles Henty .

During the tour through the Grand Hall, Court No.1 (famous for murder trials) and prisoners cells (empty in the evening!), there will be a commentary from the “Secondary” of the City of London, giving historical facts about the courts and their predecessor (Newgate prison) on which site the courts were built. This tour is open to guests but of course members will be given priority. For security purposes a list of the names of attendees will be required.

The cost of the tour is £15 per person, and the money will go to the Sheriffs’ and Recorder’s Fund, which aims to improve communities and help ex-offenders and their families.

We have booked space in the nearby Côte restaurant for those of us who would like to complete the evening with a meal. It is at 26 Ludgate Hill. The restaurant website is They need us to preorder our meals as we will be arriving at their prime time. Please contact the Secretary for a copy of the Events set menu and return your choices with your response. The meal is not included in the price of the tour!
