August 2015

The Annual Lunch was a great occasion. The House of Lords was a very impressive venue, and our speaker, Baroness Meta Ramsay, was extremely interesting, speaking about her past life in the security services. The weather was not on our side but it didn’t dampen our enjoyment of the situation.

Our next event is a guided tour of the WWT London Wetland Centre at Barnes. This is a beautiful wildlife reserve and international award winning visitor attraction. The site supports a wealth of wetland wildlife including colourful wild ducks, frogs, a colony of water voles, lizards and migratory birds which arrive in large numbers from around the globe. Website – http://www.wwt.org.uk/wetland-centres/london/ .
The tour will take place on Saturday the 26th of September. We are to meet at 11am. outside the visitor centre and admissions area, to start the guided tour by 11.30am. Guests will be welcome at this function.
There are two cafes, the Water’s Edge and the Courtyard on-site if people want to stay and have lunch after the tour finishes. They both serve a selection of hot and cold food and drinks.

The cost of the tour will include a cup of tea or coffee on arrival. The concession price is for age 65 and over and the cost for Friends is solely to cover the tour. If you are a Friend please don’t forget your membership card.

WWT London Wetland Centre is well served by public transport. The nearest underground station is Hammersmith and the nearest rail stations are Barnes and Barnes Bridge.
Bus: From Hammersmith bus station (next to the District & Piccadilly lines station) take the number 283 direct to the centre. From Barnes mainline station take bus 33 or 72, or from Barnes Bridge take bus 209.
Train: From Waterloo, Clapham Junction or Richmond, alight at Barnes or Barnes Bridge. The London Wetland Centre is a fifteen minute walk from Barnes and Barnes Bridge stations, or 5 minutes by bus (see above).
